This vase is an iconic piece of WW1 trench art. The 1916 2 pounder shell has been made into a vase, with cut-like edges. The shellcase was manufactured by VSM – Vickers, Sons & Maxim, Brass shell, dated 1916, is marked 2 PDR 1 with a 1915 dated V.S.M fuse. In 1916 the Vickers 2 pdr gun was primarily used on most of the Royal Navy fleet as an anti aircraft gun. WW2 saw them back in service again with smaller vessels and in ground mounted form. Markings: 2 Pdr 1, Broad Arrow, N, 2 – Navy ,V.S.M – Vickers, Sons & Maxim Cf – Cordite filled, Primer No51, 12/15, 1916, The outside has been decorated nicely with YPRES, 1914-1918 and a flag design.
